Book Review: Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson

We’re kicking off our first company-wide bookclub with an internal favorite: Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson. We choose this book because every time we would meet in person, we realized that a certain genre and book series was consistently brought up. Nearly half of our employees have previously read Mistborn, and once you’ve read one book of Sanderson’s, you tend to read a lot more.

If you come across a Millennial Employee, ask them about their book favorites! In the meantime, read some of our reviews below:

As the recommended entry point to Sanderson’s Cosmere, Mistborn exemplifies the storytelling attributes he is known for. Complex world-building, interesting settings, three-dimensional characters, intricate magic systems, and a dose of humor makes Mistborn a great read for any fan of fantasy fiction.

Mistborn is a fast paced fantasy story that is unlike any other story I’ve read before. There are heists, a completely unique magic system, and a deep lore that is sure to draw any lover of fantasy right in.

After discovering Sanderson’s work through The Wheel of Time, I dove straight into Mistborn excited for more epic fight scenes and deep existential questions. Every aspect of Mistborn opens up our window into this high-fantasy land, but the characters are where the heart of the book is found. Mistborn is a fantastic gateway to a wider world, but does have points that drag as the universe is just beginning to get established.

Sanderson has a way of drawing you into his books. I felt so invested in all the characters and had to know what happened. Vin's character is relatable on so many levels from insecurities, learning to trust others and overcoming the obstacles in her life. I highly recommend going through the Sanderson Cosmere. I have thoroughly enjoyed all his books.
